Chamblee -- DeKalb County authorities confirm one person has died after a small plane crash near the 4000 block of Chamblee Dunwoody Road.

The crash happened near a residential area shortly after 150pm.

Initial reports from the FAA indicated that the plane is a Piper Saratoga, registered to Women's Medicine Incorporated of Jacksonville Beach, Florida. But a spokesman for Women's Medicine in Jacksonville Beach tells 11Alive's sister station, First Coast News, that they sold the plane recently.

FAA Spokesperson Kathleen Bergen says the crash took place shortly after the plane took off from DeKalb Peachtree Airport. Bergen says the plane was reportedly in route to Branch County Memorial Airport in Cold Water, Michigan.

Bergen says the plane can carry up to 6 people.
