In Friday's consumer and money headlines, saving money on your car insurance.
Keep in mind that Georgia law requires you have $25,000 in medical coverage to a maximum of $50,000 for any one accident; and $25,000 in property damage.
If you borrowed money from a bank to get the vehicle, you may also have to get collision and comprehensive coverage -- enough to insure against theft, vandalism and fire.
As you shop the various insurance companies for the best rates, think about raising the deductible for collision and comprehensive. You will have to pay more for repairs but it will save money on the premium.
And, know how many miles you drive each day or week. Many insurance companies give discounts depending on how much you use your vehicle.
Here's another point to consider -- be accident and violation free for three years, take a defensive driving course, and you could save a bundle. For students, driver education courses will qualify for discounts. Some companies also give reduced rates for good school grades.
Also, and ask about insuring your home and car with the same company. That often brings a discount.
Also check out discounts for airbags, automatic seatbelts, anti-theft alarms, and anti-lock brakes. And remember, pay the premium when it's due as there is no grace period for auto insurance.
