Angel Food Ministries Helps Families Stretch Budgets

Several days a week, the warehouse at Angel Food Ministries in Monroe, Georgia is a bevy of activity. Permanent and temporary workers fill hundreds of food boxes with groceries that recipients will get for $30.00, a discount of more than 50 percent. "There are frozen chickens, pork riblets, broccoli, rib eye steaks, burgers," said Johnny Willis, who oversees the massive operation.

The nondenominational program began in 1994 on the back porch of Pastors Joe and Linda Wingo's Walton County home.
It is now a huge operation delivering to 38 states. "A lot of the low prices come through buying power. When you are the third largest buyer of chicken or produce from suppliers, you'll get a significant discount on wholesale prices," said Angel Food Ministries Spokesman Lawrence Swicegood.

He says there is a large misconception among consumers that the Angel Food program is only for the needy. "The more people who purchase the food the more people we can help. Anybody can buy the food and then we get better pricing, more transportation routes and more food products," he said.

Swicegood said Angel Food Ministries also offers hundreds of jobs to Walton County residents who would otherwise be unemployed.

Customers can order through dozens of churches in the Metro Atlanta area. Food box pickup dates are once a month and very depending on the church. There is no limit to how many boxes you can buy.
