Jackson Memorial Most-Watched, Most Commented Event Ever

(11ALIVE) -- Tuesday's memorial of Michael Jackson very well may have been one of the most watched events in history.

Media reports indicate that hundred of millions of people tuned in on television and online to watch the Jackson memorial from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Social networks were blowing up with comments about Michael Jackson.

This animation from Twitscoop shows the progression of popular targets throughout the day. The top trending topics Tuesday on Twitter all centered around Michael Jackson and the memorial.

Over on Facebook, Mashable.com reports an average of 6,000 status updates per minute were being recorded. That's double the rate Facebook saw during Barack Obama's inauguration.

Facebook users were able to comment on and update their status while watching a live stream of the memorial on CNN.com.

Mashable predicted that Facebook would clear one million updates today because of the Michael Jackson memorial.

Meanwhile, Jackson's page on Facebook exploded with fans. Tuesday afternoon, the page had more than 7 million fans. Before his death, the page had less than 100,000 fans.

Celebrities took advantage of social networks to pay tribute to the late King of Pop.

Dolly Parton posted a video on YouTube, paying tribute to Jackson.

"You know Michael said it best... 'Dont stop 'til you get enough!' And that's real," said recording artist Usher on Twitter.

"That was the most emotional performance of my life... rest in peace Michael... you will always be in my heart," Usher added on Twitter after performing during the ceremony.

"I'm honored to have been asked to play at MJ's memorial service. I will be representing all of us who can't be there," said singer John Mayer on Twitter.
