FAIRBURN, Ga. -- As job fairs go, the one held Monday in Fairburn was pretty small. But what it lacked in size, it made up for in community spirit.

With Georgia's unemployment rate at 10.3 percent, job fairs are usually well-attended events.

Beverly Davis doesn't need a job. She's an entrepreneur. But, she did see a need in her community of Fairburn, south of Atlanta. So, she organized a job fair for about one hundred of her closest neighbors.

"When one door shuts, another one opens," Davis said Monday. "There is an opportunity somewhere. It just takes time and some people coming together to help each other to solve a problem."

Only three employers were on hand. But almost a dozen others who couldn't make it pledged to welcome employment applications.

"I put it all on one sheet of paper so that the job seeker might not necessarily see somebody in person, but they do have the information to contact each company to find out what's open and how to apply for a job. So, they still walk away with some good information."

Just to make sure all of her bases, and the bases of her neighbors were covered, Davis brought in the Salvation Army to help people register for emergency financial assistance.

It's a small community effort she hopes will make a big difference for her neighbors. "I just hope everybody walks away with something, either with a job or a contact on how to find a job," she said.
