MARIETTA, GA -- The floods that devastated neighborhoods in Cobb County displaced hundreds of families from their homes and also displaced pets from their owners.
More than 70-displaced animals were rescued in Cobb County at the height of the flooding. Many of those animals were claimed by their owners but several are still unclaimed.
Finding homes for those unclaimed animals is a top priority for Cobb County Animal Control. Those 16-animals are being held separate from other animals at the county's animal shelter until their owners claim them.
At the height of the flooding, animal control officers went house to house in looking for abandoned animals. Many of them were rescued by boat. They were left behind by owners who were facing life or death decisions.
Cobb County is even waiving a $50 reclaiming fee for owners of the displaced pets. But they can only keep them for so long according to Officer Nathan McCreary.
"They're being held hopefully to find their rightful owner," he said. "On November 3rd they will go into an adoptable status and they will be up for adoption."
Animal control has launched a web site for flood victims who may have lost their pets. The site www.cobbcounty.org/animalcontrol has pictures of the animals and locations where they were found. "Check out the website, look at the photos, find out the areas they've come from," Officer McCreary said. "Even if you didn't lose your pet maybe your neighbor did and if you can recognize these animals' help us find the rightful owner."
The animals are being kept in a quarantine area separate from the general population with other strays. If you can't get on the website, call Cobb County Animal Control at 770-499-4136.
