ATLANTA -- The parents of Robert Champion, Jr. will officially file lawsuit against Florida A&M University this week, the family's attorney confirmed Tuesday.
Champion, a Decatur native, was beaten to death aboard a parked charter bus following a band performance in Orlando last November. Champion was a drum major in FAMU's famed Marching 100 band.
Authorities have since determined he was killed during a hazing incident and have ruled his death a homicide. Eleven people, mostly fellow students, face felony charges in Champion's death.
Champion's parents, Pam and Robert Champion, Sr., announced plans to sue the university back in December, but had to wait at least six months to file suit because the school is a state institution.
In February, the Champions sued Fabulous Coach Lines, the charter bus company that operated "Bus C," where Champion was beaten.
The Champions will hold a 4 pm news conference in Orlando to announce the lawsuit.
