Laramie, WY (Sports Network) - Luke Martinez paced the hosts with 20 points as
the Wyoming Cowboys used a strong second half to pick up a 73-60 victory over
the NC Central Eagles on opening night of the Global Sports Hoops Showcase at
the Arena-Auditorium.
Leonard Washington added a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds for
Wyoming (2-0), as it improved to 2-0 for the second season in a row. Derrious
Gilmore contributed 10 points, Riley Grabau dished out five assists, and Larry
Nance Jr. grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Ray Williams netted 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds for NC Central
(1-2). Jeremy Ingram posted 11 points and six boards while Emanuel Chapman
handed out five assists.
Despite shooting 57.9 percent from the field and making 10-of-11 at the free
throw line in the opening 20 minutes, the Eagles went into halftime trailing
38-36. Wyoming shot only 47.1 percent from the floor, but attempted 15 more
field goals in the first half to build its narrow lead.
The Cowboys build a double-digit lead after the break by converting 10-of-18
from the field and 12-of-17 at the charity stripe. NC Central made only seven
of its 26 field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes.
Wyoming held a 34-23 edge in the rebounding battle.
