Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - Alan Williams registered a huge double-
double with 29 points and 17 rebounds as the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos slipped
by Santa Clara, 83-80, in overtime during a non-conference contest at the
Leavey Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Gauchos (3-4) were Kyle Boswell and
Taran Brown with 15 and 11 points, respectively, the latter adding nine
rebounds in an effort to offset his six turnovers as UCSB snapped a two-game
slide.
The Broncos (5-2), who lost their second straight overtime affair after
opening the campaign with five consecutive victories, were paced by Kevin
Foster with 28 points and nine assists, although he shot just 4-of-13 behind
the three-point line and 9-of-23 from the floor overall, not to mention 6-
of-11 at the charity stripe. Evan Roquemore tallied 22 points, Raymond Cowels
III accounted for 11, while Niyi Harrison and Marc Trasolini contributed with
11 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
Despite shooting only 34.4 percent from the floor in the first half, which
included 3-of-13 beyond the arc, Santa Clara managed to move out to a narrow
30-28 advantage at the break.
In the second half the Broncos again had a hard time finding the mark (.393),
but a pair of free throws by Foster put the team ahead by two, 67-65 with less
than a minute remaining in regulation. Roquemore added a pair of free throws
of his own to extend the lead to four, but a three-pointer by Brown cut the
advantage to just a single point with 8.2 seconds left.
Forced to foul, UCSB sent Cowels III to the free-throw line where he made a
pair to make the score 71-68 in favor of the hosts. With time winding down
Boswell connected on a three-pointer that pushed the game into overtime.
In the extra session the Gauchos made only 2-of-7 shots from the field, but
did connect on 8-of-14 at the charity stripe in order to seal the win.
The Broncos ended the contest shooting only 36.9 percent from the floor and
23-of-35 at the free-throw line.
