ATLANTA -- The first day of August means it's time for high school football teams to put on the pads. Across the state today high school football teams are holding their first workouts in full gear.
Some teams couldn't wait to get started. In Alpharetta, the Cambridge Bears planned to take the field for their Midnight Growl at 12:01, but bad weather delayed their first workout until 2 a.m.
The rain was still falling when the Bears started their first full gear workout for the 2013 season."We had this last year", said Head Coach Craig Bennett." We were not planning on doing it again, but the kids wanted to and we felt like if they wanted to do again we would do it and make it a tradition"
Last year Cambridge played a varsity schedule as a brand new school and posted a 1-9 record. This year's team will open the 2013 season August 30 at Riverwood.
Meanwhile, there are different expectations at Norcross, where the Blue Devils will try and successfully defend their class AAAAAA State Championship from 2012.Coach Keith Maloof's squad hit the practice field in pads for the first time this morning at 8:30am.
For much of last season Norcross flew below the radar. That won't be the case in 2013 and Maloof knows his team will be a big target this fall.
" There are only 6 teams trying to repeat", said Maloof. " We are one of the six and we have to work hard to develop this team. Last year's team had great chemistry. This year we have to wait and see how it develops".
The Norcross Blue Devils will kick off the season August 24 at home against Booker T. Washington High School from Miami, Florida in a game that will be nationally televised.
