ATLANTA -- Gwinnett County police are searching for robbery suspect who fled a crash scene on foot near the Buford Highway Connector Thursday afternoon.
The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Derrick Jamal Rankins and he is wanted for two counts of armed robbery and one count of false imprisonment.
According to authorities, Rankins held a 10-year-old and 14-year-old hostage for about 30 minutes during a home invasion on the 4100 block of Suwanee Trail Drive in Buford. Gwinnett County officers spotted the suspect on Interstate 85 and got behind him -- the suspect then engaged authorities in a brief chase.
Authorities pursued the suspect from Beaver Ruin Road until he crashed near Buford Highway. The crash occurred off the highway and authorities were unable to apprehend the suspect.
Police say the suspect is a black male, about six feet tall and 170 lbs., wearing a white v-neck shirt and camouflage shorts.
