Streetcar and Beltline figure into 2 Atlanta referendums

Ballot measures include Beltline, Streetcar

ATLANTA -- Voters in Atlanta will decide on two different ballot questions that, combined, would raise the city’s sales tax by nearly a penny.  There's a TV ad that features Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, who leaves office at the end of next year. Like most TV commercials, and it’s long on promises but short on details. 

"We all know there’s too much traffic. Let’s do something about it. Vote yes on both ballot measures," Reed says at the start of the ad. 

There are two measures.  A MARTA tax would add a half cent to the penny sales tax already imposed within the city of Atlanta.  And a transportation tax would add four-tenths of a penny – raising the city sales tax from 8 percent to 8.9 percent.

There is a list of road projects, detailed here. It includes traffic light synchronization projects. And it also acquires right of way for undeveloped portions of the Atlanta Beltline – and a nearly equal amount for “sidewalks and streetscapes.” 

The public transportation list is extensive – with a potential new MARTA station two miles further west at ML King and I-285, plus five new “infill stations”, 17 "station enhancements," eleven “bus service improvements.” It also includes six potential light rail projects – like the Atlanta streetcar.  One rail line would run along a portion of the Atlanta Beltline.  Another would go into the new Georgia State development adjacent to Turner Field.

In the ad, Reed promises "less traffic in every neighborhood."
