Man charged in stepson's death to lose job

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. – A Clayton County teacher charged with murder in his stepson’s death is losing his job.

Michael Smith has been charged with murder and child cruelty, after his 11-year-old stepson, who had autism, drowned in the bathtub at their Morrow home.

Smith told police he was tending to other children, and left the 11-year-old in six inches of water.

Smith, who had no prior criminal record, was a teacher at Roberta T. Smith Elementary School.

The Clayton County Board of Education recommended Michael Smith's resignation during a Sept. 6 board meeting.
