ATLANTA -- Media pioneer Ted Turner has donated $1 million to a fund that helps save endangered gorillas in eastern Congo.
Turner announced in a statement Wednesday night that his contributions will go to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, an Atlanta-based organization.
Clare Richardson, the CEO of the DFGFI, said Turner's donation is the largest gift the organization has received.
Turner, the founder of CNN, said he used to study the great apes as a young boy and talked about his interest in endangered species at an event gathering of organization supporters that was held at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History.
Turner said the objective of his donation is to "save the apes and their habitats ... two gorillas in every garage."
