Teenager shot, killed in northwest Atlanta

15-year-old boy shot and killed

ATLANTA, Ga -- Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy in northwest Atlanta.

The teen was shot at 3806 Adkins Road. Police say the victim was not alert or conscious when they arrived on the scene. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police say one person, a family member, has been detained in their investigation, and that person is cooperating. Police also say it is too early to determine if any charges will be filed.

The victim's girlfriend told 11Alive's Duffie Dixon that he attended Benjamin Mays High School, earned good grades and played football.

An alumni Twitter page for the school identified the victim as Marquez Montgomery.

Atlanta Public Schools issued a statement on Tuesday saying:

"Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Marquez Montgomery, who attended Benjamin E. Mays High School.  Atlanta Public Schools sent a crisis team to Mays this morning to provide grief counseling for students and staff."
