Transgender student fights back after judge refuses name change

Transgender student fights name change denial

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. -- Lambda Legal is fighting back after a superior court judge refused to allow a transgender Georgia State graduate student to legally change his name.

"This court not only made a decision that we think was biased against transgender people but also sexist and denied our client his right to free expression," senior attorney Beth Littrell said.

Judge J. David Roper previously refused to allow Rebeccah Feldhaus to legally change his name to Rowan.

In both cases, the judge said he would not grant a name change from one that is "obviously female to an obviously male name.

Lambda Legal is now appealing both rulings.
