Woman terrified after home burglarized while she slept

ATLANTA -- A southeast Atlanta woman says she's afraid to live in her own home after someone broke into it while she was inside.

The woman, who asked 11Alive News not to identify her because she is deathly afraid the suspect will come back, believes he's already broken into her home three times in the past month.

The most recent break-in was May 2. She had just hung up some clothes in the backyard and sat down on her couch and fell asleep when she was burglarized.

"I had left the back doors unlocked, but they were closed," she said. "When I woke up, I noticed my cat acting strange and I realized that he was in my house."

According to an Atlanta Police Department incident report, the suspect "began to go through drawers looking for valuables." It said the suspect dumped the woman's purse out on the dining room floor and stole a credit card. He then walked into the room she was sleeping in and opened a drawer and took her car keys.

The report said the woman woke up, realized what had happened, screamed in a panic, then called 911. "And then I looked and my car was gone and my purse had been dumped out," she said.

But this time police got lucky. The suspect tried to use the woman's credit card at a Kroger on Moreland Avenue. The report said he made four attempts but the car was denied all four times because the woman had immediately cancelled her card.

Police were able to retrieve a surveillance photo of the suspect in the store. It shows him smiling as if taunting the victim. But his actions already have her petrified. "I'm afraid to even go out in the back (yard) now," she said. "I can't even enjoy my yard I can't do anything."

Several residents in the Woodland Ave. neighborhood said there have been a number of break-ins there. Atlanta Police couldn't pull burglary records Monday night. A spokesperson said it's possible there have been other cases.

If you recognize the suspect in the surveillance photo call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS (8477)
