Unique Eats - Loretta's Country Kitchen

If you're tired of the turkey leftovers...but are still in the mood for some down home cooking, it's Chris's turn for a southern style Unique Eats.

I actually found this place from my parents. Whenever we drive to north Georgia to visit our relatives, we have to set aside some time to stop on the way in Oakwood, Ga. to visit Loretta's Country Kitchen.
If you are looking for fancy menus and a fru fru setting...then Loretta's is not for you!

"There's nothing fancy about it, its just good old fashioned southern cooking." That's Loretta of Loretta's Country Kitchen. Mention her name in Oakwood and you might begin to hear some stomach's growling.

"We try to make as much from scratch as possible. The sweet potato soufflé was my grandmother's recipe."

And that's not all, the meats, vegetables, desserts all give you the feeling of eating at grandma's house. Oh...did I mention the biscuits?

"Our biscuits we make from scratch, there's no frozen biscuits here. We make 500 biscuits a day by hand, we mix 'em by hand, cut 'em by hand just like you'd get at home."

And that reputation is making Loretta somewhat of a celebrity in Oakwood. But the secret is that her husband is in the kitchen.

"They want to know who Loretta is. So I'll introduce her and she'll just talk and talk and talk and I say alright now you need to explain that I do all the work and you get the credit...it's kind of one of those deals."

"Now when you eat at Loretta's you have some decisions to make, not only what good food you're going to eat, but where you're going to sit. You need to know about this table in the back corner affectionately known as the 'bull hockey' table. It's usually the loudest table in the restaurant and what it said here is totally off the record."

So it's your choice get full from the bull...or from the food. But at Loretta's "it's all good!"

Loretta's country kitchen is in Hall County. You'll have to travel up I-85 to I-985 then get off at exit 16 and go left.

It is open for breakfast lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday...but is closed on Sunday.
