Police: Man charged in Midtown crosswalk murder accused in another grisly crime

Man arrested for Peachtree Street murder

ATLANTA -- A man accused of gunning down a woman on a busy Midtown street Monday morning is accused in another disturbing crime nearby on the previous day.

Police announced the arrest of 39-year-old Raylon Browning on Tuesday. He's charged in the murder of Trinh Huynh. Authorities said the 40-year-old lawyer was shot multiple times as she walked across Peachtree Street Monday morning.

According to Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Darryl Tolleson, police officers in Cobb County pulled Browning over after he allegedly ran a red light Monday around 9 p.m. When they ran a background check on him, they found that he had outstanding arrest warrants for an incident that occurred Sunday morning.

In that incident, which happened around 6 a.m. at 1180 Peachtree Street -- a short distance from the spot where Huynh was murdered -- a worker painting at the site said he didn't hear anything, but saw a man come around a corner "bleeding quite a bit" after being stabbed. As he tended to that victim, the witness said he saw Browning head towards another worker.

That man said he was working when he saw Browning come around with the corner with what looked to be a knife "holding it in a downward stabbing position." When he tried to fight Browning off, the victim was stabbed in the top right part of his head.

A contractor at the scene told the responding police officer that Browning had gotten kicked off the job by another contracting company for "flipping out on the foreman at the location."

Both victims were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and listed in critical condition on Tuesday, Tolleson said.

After being pulled over Monday night for the traffic violation, Cobb police arrested Browning when they discovered the outstanding warrants. At the time of his arrest, Browning was wearing shorts and shoes consistent with what a suspect captured on surveillance footage near the shooting scene was wearing, police said. While doing an inventory of Browning's vehicle, police said they found a hooded sweatshirt that matched what the man was wearing in that video. Police also said they found a weapon that was a preliminary match in the shooting.

An investigator in the stabbing case saw similarities in a photo of Browning and the surveillance video from the Peachtree Street murder. He then contacted homicide detectives. A CrimeStoppers tip also identified Browning as the gunman in the shooting.

It's not yet known what connection, if any, Browning had to Huynh. In the news conference, Tolleson said the arrest was just the start of the investigation.

Browning is charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
