WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Police arrested a mother who allegedly left her two young children in an unlocked car while she shopped at a Michaels craft store.
According to the incident report, officers were called to the Michaels store on Crossville Road around 12:23 p.m. on Friday when someone reported see two unattended children in a car.
Officers found a Honda minivan running with a a 2-year-old girl strapped in her car seat watching a movie, and a 1-year-old boy asleep in another car seat. The vehicle's air conditioning was running and the doors were unlocked, police said,
One officer stayed with the kids, while another went inside the store to find their parents. A few minutes later, the children's mother, identified as 34-year-old Jennifer Wattenbarger, ran out from the store to the vehicle.
She said that she had run into the store to buy a gift for the 2-year-old, and didn't want the child to see it.
An employee of the store said that surveillance video showed that the mother had been in the store for about 34 minutes.
Officers called the children's father and placed Wattenbarger under arrest. She was charged with two counts of reckless conduct and transported to North Fulton Jail. She was released on $4,500 bond on April 29.
