ATLANTA -- Two political opponents have taken a short break from their heated campaign - one for his engagement and another to congratulate him.
On Saturday, Karen Handel congratulated District 6 opponent Jon Ossoff on his engagement.
"Steve and I send our congratulations to the future Mr. and Mrs. Ossoff," Handel said in a written statement. "We have learned a lot over nearly 25 years of marriage."
It stands in stark contrast to campaigns on both sides that has become far less than friendly as the runoff election nears.
"Having a partner who is the love of your life ultimately makes the hard days better, and the journey more complete," Handel said. "Steve and I wish them the best in their future together."
The District 6 race in Georgia has received national attention in recent weeks, including that of President Donald Trump himself who was in town the previous weekend for a National Rifle Association convention. Higher-ups in the Democratic National Committee and the party as a whole have also flocked to Georgia since a runoff was announced between Ossoff and Handel.
The two are both vying for the congressional seat left open by former Representative Tom Price who was tapped by President Trump to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. The election is slated for June 20.
