Race to replace Price: Ossoff still leading, Gray edging Handel in campaign's final poll

18-candidate race even has the attention of the White House

ATLANTA, Ga – With less than 24 hours before election day, a new poll in the closely watched 6th district race shows Republicans may have a new frontrunner.

The poll, conducted by zpolitics and Clout Research, shows Bob Gray edging ahead of Karen Handel for a possible June 20 runoff.

Democrat Jon Ossoff continues to dominate the race, with 41 percent. However, Gray has taken the lead over Handel, by a margin of 17 to 15 percent.

State Sen. Judson Hill is pulling 10 percent support, while former state senator Dan Moody trails with 9 percent. Businessman David Abroms has 3 percent backing within the District, while former Trump Diversity Coalition leader Bruce Levell has 1 percent of the vote.

“It is simply too close to call which of the Republicans will finish second and get into the runoff with Ossoff,” said Clout pollster Fritz Wenzel. “Gray has increased by one point up to 17%, while Handel has decreased by a point, to 15%,  but the difference between them is statistically insignificant.”

Despite raking in over $8 million in campaign contributions, Wenzel added that Ossoff appears unlikely to flip the 6th district in a runoff with virtually any GOP candidate.

"The problem for Ossoff is that he has been unable to attract that half of the independent voters in the district skew Republican,” he said. “That, combined with the reality that Democrat voters in the district are substantially outnumbered by Republicans, very likely seals his fate.

"Ossoff is likely to easily win the primary, but is just as likely to lose the runoff to whichever Republican comes in second place."

A total of 18 candidates are running in the special election to replace Tom Price, set for April 18. Price is now President Donald Trump's secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,  Polls throughout the metro Atlanta district will be open from 7 am to 7 pm, and 11Alive will be bringing you the results as they happen on Tuesday night.
