CHAMBLEE, Ga – A new poll released by a Democratic polling firm shows Jon Ossoff leading Republican Karen Handel in the race to replace Tom Price in the 6th congressional district runoff.
The poll, conducted by Anzalone Listz Grove Research, shows Ossoff, a Democrat, ahead of Handel by one point, 48-47, and leading by 12 points among voters who went to the polls on April 18 but did not vote in the 2014 midterms.
The poll was conducted on April 23-26, 2017 among 590 likely June run-off voters, with an error margin of four percentage points.
Anzalone Liszt Grove Research describes itself as a “progressive public-opinion research firm with offices in Montgomery, Ala.; Washington, D.C.; New York; Chicago; and Honolulu. According to its website, the firm “is especially proud of our role helping elect President Obama in both 2008 and 2012. We have a long record of electing Democrats in tough states and districts, winning more Republican-held Congressional seats over the past four cycles than any other polling firm.”
11Alive reached out to Handel's campaign for a comment on the poll, but has not received a reply.
Ossoff finished the April 18 special election with 48 percent of the vote, short of the 50-percent-plus margin he would have needed to win the contest outright. Handel finished with 20 percent of the vote in the crowded race.
“Part of Ossoff’s success in earning 48% in the April special election was his ability to drive turnout among voters who do not typically vote in special elections or midterms,” the poll said. “According to voter file results, 25% of all voters who participated in the April special election voted in 2016, but had not voted in 2014. In the current polling of run-off voters, Ossoff holds at 12-point lead over Handel among these voters.”
The race in metro Atlanta's 6th congressional district has national implications, as Democrats are trying to flip a district that has been in GOP hands since 1978. Reflecting the race's importance in setting a trend for the 2018 midterms, even President Donald Trump has gotten involved, holding a fundraiser for Handel last week.
