With one day to go, President Donald Trump has jumped into Georgia's 6th Congressional District race to replace HHS Secretary Tom Price in what has been a Republican seat for more than 40 years.
Upstart Democrat Jon Ossoff, has turned the race for the seat from Atlanta's affluent north suburbs into an early referendum on Trump.
While up to 11 Republican candidates have strongly competed in the race for the seat, only Ossoff has emerged as a significant candidate on the Democratic side in the race.
Ossoff has raised more than $8 million in the first quarter, far more than his rivals, and much of that coming from outside of the district.
If a single candidate can land 50 percent of the total number of votes cast plus one vote, they would win the election outright. However, with the large number of candidates in the race, it was expected that the race would go to a June runoff, with the top two vote-getters vying for the seat.
President Donald Trump on Monday morning jumped into the increasingly volatile war of words over the race, using his usual choice of venue: Twitter.
Ossoff responded later in the morning, noting that Trump is not properly informed regarding the race.
"While I'm glad the President is interested in the race, he is misinformed. I'm focused on bringing fresh leadership, accountability, and bipartisan problem solving to Washington to cut wasteful spending and grow metro Atlanta's economy into the Silicon Valley of the South."
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed spoke out in an appearance on MSNBC on Monday.
"The people in the 6th District will ultimately make that decision," Reed said, speaking to MSNBC anchor Kris Jansing about the race. "Not you, and not me."
Tuesday's Georgia special election comes only a week following a much closer-than-expected special congressional election win for Republican Ron Estes in Kansas, where Estes, an incumbent who was expected to win handily, only won by five percentage points.
The polls in the Georgia 6th District special election race will be open from 7 am to 7 pm Tuesday.
