SMYRNA, Ga. -- A suspect was taken into custody after shots were fired at a Cobb County mental health facility on Wednesday.

According to Cobb County Police, shots were fired at the Ridgeview Institute on South Cobb Drive around 2:30 p.m.

A man was at the facility seeking help. Some sort of argument ensued and multiple shots were fired.

“It appears he did not want to remain at that facility, he produced a handgun, he began firing his handgun," said Smyrna Ppolice Sgt. Louis Defense.

The man fled the scene and was arrested about 30 minutes later in a wooded area.

No injuries were reported.

Several schools in the area were placed on lockdown as authorities searched for the suspect.

Ridgeview Institute is a private, not-for-profit hospital treating people with addiction or mental health problems, according to its website.

Authorities did not specify if the suspect was an inpatient at the facility, or how he was able to get the gun inside.
