Sheriff: Suspect arrested after killing man, firing at deputies

The incident began around 7 a.m. and spanned two counties.

MONROE COUNTY, Ga. -- A man was arrested after authorities said he killed a man in Crawford County and then fired on deputies in Monroe County early Friday.

The incident began with an argument between two men in Crawford County around 7 a.m., according to 11Alive sister station WMAZ.

“There’s two males that were arguing with each other, and there was a female that was here,” said GBI special agent J.T. Ricketson.

Authorities said one of the men shot and killed the other man. A family member found the victim’s body in the yard.

The alleged gunman, Thomas Gary Palmer, and the woman drove about 20 miles to Monroe County.

Around 9 a.m., the woman called authorities from a Marathon gas station and reported that she’d seen an assault and had been kidnapped.

Responding deputies learned that Palmer had been dropped off on Harrison Road near Klopfer Road.  When authorities located Palmer in that area, he allegedly fired shots on three Monroe County deputies. The deputies returned fire and Palmer dropped his weapon.

When the deputies attempted to arrest Palmer, he then allegedly got out another weapon. After an altercation, the deputies took Palmer into custody.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been contacted to handle the investigation.

The victim’s name has not been released.
