PD: Drugged driver damages Colo. dealership

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. – Greenwood Village police say a man suspected to be under the influence of drugs was involved in a bizarre crash that resulted in damage to more than 20 new cars on a dealership's lot.

Police believe 22-year-old Joshua Lopez, of Aurora, was under the influence of an "inhalant" drug when he crashed his SUV on top of several new cars on Arapahoe Kia's dealership's lot after rolling several times.

It began late Thursday morning, when police say Lopez, driving a Honda Pilot, swiped a traffic sergeant's unmarked car parked in a lot near Arapahoe Road and Clinton Court.

The Greenwood Village sergeant attempted to contact Lopez, who appeared to be slumped over at the wheel. When the sergeant approached the driver's side window, police say Lopez attempted to punch him in the face before driving away at approximately 50 mph.

According to police, Lopez lost control of the vehicle moments later after hitting a curb while heading northbound on Clinton Court. As the driver lost control, the SUV slid on some nearby gravel, rolling four to five times. It came to rest on top of several new Kia vehicles on the Arapahoe Kia dealer lot, according to Greenwood Village police.

After the crash, the sergeant chased Lopez on foot a short distance before taking him into custody. At least 20 more cars on the Kia lot were damaged as rocks and debris from the crash sprayed onto them.

Charges are pending, but a spokesperson for Greenwood police said Lopez will be investigated for driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving and reckless endangerment.

The Colorado State Patrol is handling the crash since it involved a police vehicle. The sergeant who captured the suspect was not injured.

At one point, police say Lopez crossed into oncoming lanes of traffic. No one else was injured. Lopez was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries.
