Woman: stranger found sleeping on her patio says 'hi,' runs away

Woman finds stranger sleeping on patio

ATLANTA -- An Atlanta woman is shaken up after having a strange encounter at her home Labor Day morning.

Maura Chey said one her dogs woke her early Monday morning. She took her dog Teddy out for a short walk and when she returned to Morningside neighborhood home she found a man she didn't know apparently sleeping on her patio.

Chey told 11Alive’s Joe Henke she was turned the corner from Sherwood Road onto her driveway and then into her front yard, when she spotted a pillow from her patio furniture on the floor. She said she thought it seemed odd.

That’s when Chey looked up and spotted a man who appeared to have been sleeping on her patio couch.

"I didn't know what he was going to do, if he was going to attack me," Chey said. "I didn't know what was going to happen."

She said the man said “Hi,” then ran down her driveway and continued west down Sherwood Road. The family's security camera recorded the stranger's escape.

Chey screamed for her husband to call the police, which can be heard in the security footage. But when officers arrived to search the neighborhood, she said they couldn’t find any signs of the man.

"(It's) Very disturbing that someone can come in and violate your home and make themselves so comfortable here," Chey said. "It makes me wonder had he been casing this house?"

The front patio of Chey's home is hard to see from the road. Very tall bushes sit between the road and her patio. Chey later found a cigarette butt next to couch, but said no one in her family smokes.

Atlanta police are investigating the matter, but didn’t offer any details when 11Alive inquired about the incident.
