COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say an Orkin pest control manager is credited with helping to save lives when he saw fire slicing through the roof of a Georgia home.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that Jeffrey Dancy was making his rounds exterminating critters when he saw the flames and smoke pouring from the home in south Columbus Tuesday morning.

Authorities said a family was sleeping inside. Dancy says he repeatedly pounded on the door, which awoke resident Donita Roberson. She, her husband her 18-year-old son were able to escape without injury.

Fire Marshal Ricky Shores said that if it hadn't been for Dancy, the situation could have turned out very badly.

Dancy, who lives in Phenix City, Ala., helped train firefighters while serving in the Navy before he joined Atlanta-based Orkin.
