DECATUR, Ga. -- Agnes Scott College has cut 16 staff positions and offered early retirement to some of its employees.

"It's more of a long-term financial plan move, not short-term financial difficulty," said Megan Terraso, a spokeswoman for the women's college in Decatur.

Nine faculty members and 15 staff members accepted the offer to retire early, at the end of June. To qualify, employees had to be at least 62 and have worked with the college for at least 10 years.

Terraso said some of the faculty members who are retiring will be replaced.

"The college's finances are going well," she said.

The college, which has about 930 students, saw it's largest ever freshman class this past fall.
