(CNN) -- Classic chick flick "Steel Magnolias" is getting a remake with an all-black cast, courtesy of Lifetime. Deadline reports that the network is developing an original movie based on the hit film.
Like the 1989 movie (which was based on a stage play), Lifetime's new version will revolve around a close group of women in Louisiana. The new version will be helmed by Atlanta-based award-winning director Kenny Leon.
The original featured an all-star cast: Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Darryl Hannah and Olympia Dukakis. The TV movie's producers want a similarly star-studded assemblage of black actresses for their new Southern drama.
