ATLANTA -- The National Weather Service confirmed Thursday afternoon that an EF-2 tornado moved across Harris County Wednesday afternoon.
That storm touched down in Alabama before crossing into Georgia at about 1:35 p.m., tracking some 26 miles across Harris County. Officials said the tornado ended its run at the Harris-Talbot county line near Shiloh, Ga.
The storm cut a swath some 1/2 mile wide, and had peak winds of 125 mph.
Weather Service surveyers said two structures were destroyed and another 30 structures damaged -- including the Harris County school complex, which houses an elementary, middle and high school, as well as the county's 911 center and an animal shelter.
Surveyers said hundreds of trees were snapped or uprooted in the storm. Two minor injuries were reported in Harris County.
