HORTENSE, Ga. (AP) -- Georgia transportation crews this week are installing a new four-way stop at the scene of several deadly accidents in the small south Georgia community of Hortense.
The Florida Times-Union reports the most recent death at the crossroads was in September, when 64-year-old Mary Griffin Deen died at the site. Authorities say she pulled away from a stop sign on Georgia 32 and into the path of a tractor-trailer that was northbound on U.S. 301.
Deen's death prompted Sylvia Wingate, who runs a shop near the intersection, to start a petition drive for a traffic light.
The four-way stop is short of what Wingate wanted, but she said Tuesday she believes it will help cut down on deadly wrecks there.
