(WXIA) -- Star Trek fans already know that the venerable science fiction franchise celebrated its 46th anniversary over the weekend, but many may not know that the upcoming movie now has a title.
The follow-up to the 2009 blockbuster film directed by J.J. Abrams that effectively rebooted the Star Trek franchise has been running as an "untitled film" through its production.
Word emerged over the weekend that the new film will be titled Star Trek Into Darkness.
According to Trek fan site TrekMovie.com, the filmmakers have been testing a series of potential titles for the film -- the 12th Star Trek big screen adventure, including ones that did not include the words "Star Trek" in the title.
What's the title mean? What are the Enterprise crew "trekking" into exactly? All will become clear when the film is released May 17, 2013.
Star Trek Into Darkness stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana. Benedict Cumberbatch, best known for his role in the BBC series Sherlock also stars.
