RIVERDALE, Ga. -- A Riverdale man woke up $1 million richer Thursday.

David Jackson won the $1 million second prize by matching the first five winning numbers in Wednesday's historic Powerball drawing, according to Georgia Lottery spokesperson Tandi Reddick.

He bought his ticket at the Georgia Food Mart on Highway 138 in Riverdale, which will also get a share of the winnings.

Jackson, 33, found out he'd won when he checked his numbers on the Georgia Lottery's website.

"I would have been happy winning $100," he said. "This will definitely change my life."

Jackson said that he plans to spend some of the money on Christmas gifts for his six children.

"Their list is as thick as the Yellow Pages, but they'll get what they need, which are educational toys," he said. "As long as the family is happy, I'm OK."

More than 8.9 million people won smaller slices of the Powerball prize.

The state of Georgia was also a winner with $16.9 million in proceeds going to the HOPE Scholarship and Pre-K programs. Reddick said that's equivalent to more than 9,000 HOPE Awards and nearly 1,600 Pre-K spots.
