PALMETTO, Ga. -- A Union City Police car collided with a Palmetto Police car in Palmetto Tuesday morning during with a high speed chase.
Officers were first called to the United Community Bank on Shannon Parkway shortly after 10 a.m. on a report of credit card fraud, according to Union City Police Det. Gloria Hodgson. The suspect, 26-year-old Rakim Jackson, managed to get away and ran to a nearby Walgreens parking lot, where he stole a car.
Fulton County Police spokesman Scott McBride said the officers were pursuing Jackson when they crashed at Roosevelt Highway and Walnut Way, near Palmetto Cascade Highway.
A Georgia State Patrol spokesperson said the Palmetto Police Corporal Michael Upshur was making a U-turn in an attempt to block traffic when his cruiser was hit by the Union City Officer Kevin Gilham.
Both Upshur and Gilham were transported to Atlanta Medical Center. Luckily, both had only minor injuries even though both crusiers are likely totalled and both airbags deployed.
Jackson was apprehended and booked into jail.
