SMYRNA, Ga. -- A serious injury accident on Interstate 285 at S. Cobb Drive has resulted in death for a male driver.
According to Sgt. Dana Pierce of the CCPD, investigators found that the driver of a red/white 1998 Link Belt HTC8670 crane truck was stopped in traffic on the exit ramp westbound.
While the driver of the crane truck was stopped at the red traffic signal waiting to turn left onto S. Cobb Drive, the driver of a black 2012 Chevrolet Cruze hit the crane truck from behind.
After the collision, the Chevrolet rolled backwards down the exit ramp, towards southbound traffic on Interstate 285. Right before reaching the interstate, the Chevrolet came to a stop after it rolled down an embankment between the interstate and the ramp.
An ambulance took the driver of the Chevrolet to Emory Adventist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after the accident. He has been identified as 42-year-old Sylvester Johnson of Buford.
There were three juvenile passengers inside the Chevrolet at the time of the accident, who were not injured.
Also uninjured was the driver of the crane truck, 37-year-old Brian D. Maddox of Dallas, Ga.
Investigators believe they will not file charges. They are asking anyone with further information on the accident to contact (770) 499-3987.
