2012 American Eagle silver coin (US Mint)
ATLANTA (WXIA) -- Sales of the 2013 American Eagle silver bullion coins have been suspended by the U.S. Mint after they ran out of stock due to rising demand from investors.
Sales are expected to resume around the week of Jan. 28, according to an email from the Mint to authorized dealers Thursday.
According to NBC News, sales of Silver Eagle coins exceeded 5 million ounces and are on track to pass the all-time monthly sales high of 6.1 million ounces, originally set in January 2012.
Coin sales rose during late 2012 as investors sought a financial refuge from a feared recession from the so-called "fiscal cliff."
The coins generally go for $63 each from the U.S. Mint. Orders are expected to resume on Jan. 24.
