SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say two police officers have been killed in a shooting in Santa Cruz, Calif.
Santa Cruz County Sheriff Phil Wowak has confirmed that the officers died after the shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that the first of two shootings took place as police were investigating a sexual assault. A suspect fired, hitting the two officers.
The two police officers killed were identified as Sgt. Loren Baker, a 28-year veteran of the department and Detective Elizabeth Butler who was with Santa Cruz police for 10 years.
A third person was shot while police were in pursuit of the shooter. Authorities say that person also died.
Associated Press
