DECATUR, Ga. -- A detention officer recruit died Wednesday, a day after he fell sick during his second day on the job.
The recruit became ill during officer training at Panthersville Stadium on Tuesday.
According to DeKalb Co. authorities, 29-year-old George Ward began to show signs of illness after he completed a routine morning physical fitness training session.
The officer was transported to the DeKalb Medical Center where he later died.
"This is the first time that such an incident has occurred during my 12 years as Sheriff," Thomas Brown stated. "Though we had only known him for a few days, the hearts of the men and women of the Sheriff's Office are heavy."
Ward was one of 12 recruits striving to complete the Basic Jail Operations Academy, a state sanctioned course taught by Sheriff's Office staff.
