NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. -- The Scripps National Spelling Bee kicked off on Wednesday, but the road has ended for a Gwinnett County 8th grader.
Nicholas Poulos, 13, from Wesleyan School in Gwinnett was not listed among the spellers slated to tackle the increased competition in the semifinal round, beginning Thursday afternoon.
Poulos had correctly spelled words including bureaucracy and mortadella in earlier rounds on Wednesday before the final rankings were released early Thursday.
Rachel Cundey, 14, from Evans, Georgia, was among the 42 finalists slated to compete in the televised semifinal rounds beginning Thursday afternoon. This year marks her fifth consecutive appearance in the national competition. A year ago, she tied for tenth place.
