LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Atlanta Braves' right-hander Brandon Beachy is slated to make his second minor league injury rehab start for the Gwinnett Braves on Saturday, June 8 at Coolray Field, a 7:05 PM game against the Columbus Clippers. Beachy is on Atlanta's disabled list as he recovers from 2012 "Tommy John" surgery.
The 26-year-old pitcher was added to the Gwinnett roster by Atlanta on May 19 and was supposed to start that day against the Louisville Bats, but the game was postponed by rain. Since then, the right-hander has made three minor league starts, recording appearances for Class-A Rome, Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett.
In three minor league starts, Beachy is 2-0 with a 3.21 ERA (5 ER in 14.0 IP), including 11 hits allowed, five walks and 10 strikeouts. In his latest start for Mississippi on June 3 at Chattanooga, he went 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits for his second win of the season. His most impressive start thus far came on May 29 with Rome, a win vs. Charleston. In 5.0 scoreless frames, he gave up three hits, walked one and struck out three for his first rehab win.
Beachy is slated to make his second rehab start for Gwinnett. In his first outing at Coolray Field on May 24 vs. Toledo, he yielded two runs on two hits over 4.0 innings, walked three and struck out three in a no-decision. Including eight games, seven starts with the G-Braves in 2010, he's a career 3-0 with a 2.31 ERA (14 ER in 54.2 IP) in 10 games, nine starts with the Braves' Triple-A affiliate.
Last season, Beachy was tied for the Major League lead with a 1.98 ERA (17 ER in 77.1 IP) and led the Majors with a .171 opponent batting average prior to suffering a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow on June 16, 2012. He exited Atlanta's game against Baltimore after 3.2 innings and was placed on the disabled list following the game. He underwent successful "Tommy John" surgery on June 21, 2012, performed by Dr. James Andrews.
In 13 games with the Braves last year, he went 5-5 with a 2.00 ERA (18 ER in 81.0 IP). In 41 career Major League starts, Beachy is 12-10 with a 3.07 ERA (81 ER in 237.2 IP).
