CLERMONT, Ga -- A Hall County convenience store clerk wasn't afraid to fight back against an armed robber even though the only weapon he had was a flashlight.
Patel Manoj said it's the first time the Country Grocery and Deli in Clermont has been robbed. Manoj, who spoke broken English, described the robbery that happened on May 31, 2013. "He came in and tried to knife," he said. "He said I want to take money."
The suspect, described by sheriff deputies as a white male, 5'6" to 5'9" tall, 150-160lbs., with brown facial hair, was armed with a knife and threatened that he had a gun under his shirt.
"He tried to jump inside (the counter) so I opened the register and I see he have no gun," Manoj said. The suspect reached over the counter to grab money out of the register and that's when Manoj decided he had to do something. "I see he take money so is a good time to attack," he said.
What happened next is captured on store surveillance video. Manoj grabbed a flashlight from the counter and swung it at the suspect. "He's lucky it (the flashlight) not go to his head," Manoj said.
The suspect appeared to be surprise by the clerks' reaction and he ran out of the store. He jumped into a white Ford Crown Victoria and drove off as Manoj ran out of the store still threatening to hit the suspect with his flashlight. "I wanted to hold him for police," he said.
Why was he so brave? "You need to answer good so they won't try it again," Manoj said.
Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the Hall County Sheriff's Office at 770-531-6879 or leave an anonymous tip online.
