CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -- A drowning victim was recovered by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement at Red Top Mountain State Park on Allatoona Lake.
According to the Georgia DNR, Nicholas Alexander, 23, from Atlanta dove off a rental boat in the area of the park's swimming beach at about 5 p.m. Sunday and did not resurface.
Officials say Alexander was with a family group on the rental boat. The boat was near the rock jetty, about 75 feet from shore.
Witnesses said Alexander asked how deep the water was, and was told it was deep. He jumped in and was swimming fine initially. Then he began to struggle.
Witnesses on shore said they heard him call for help. Two people on shore tried unsuccessfully to reach him. At this point in DNR's investigation, there is no indication drugs or alcohol played any part in the incident.
The search and recovery included DNR, Bartow County Fire/EMA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
