MACON, Ga. (AP) -- Macon Mayor Robert Reichert and challenger C. Jack Ellis, a former Macon mayor, were the top vote-getters in a Tuesday night election and will face each other in a runoff.
With all 40 precincts and absentee ballots counted, Reichert led the field of seven candidates with 17,810 votes, giving him 49 percent of the ballots.
A candidate must receive 50 percent plus one vote to avoid a runoff. Reichert was 151 votes short of avoiding a runoff.
Ellis, with 30 percent of the vote, got 10,838 votes.
Ellis became the city's first black mayor when he was elected in 1999.
Reichert was elected mayor in 2007.
