AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) -- An eastern Georgia man has been sentenced to 60 days in jail for failing to clean a neglected swimming pool that raised concerns over mosquito breeding.
Andre England of Hephzibah was sentenced Thursday by a magistrate judge. Richmond County Mosquito Control asked England to clean the pool two years ago and issued him a violation.
England is the landlord of the property and Richmond County Mosquito Control operations manager Fred Koehle says he was given several chances to either return the pool to working order, or fill it with dirt to prevent the insects from breeding in it.
County officials have said they were concerned that mosquitoes breeding in the pool could carry West Nile virus.
