ATLANTA -- North Georgia EMC says scam artists are trying to steal customers' credit card information.
The company said in a statement Wednesday that someone is calling customers to tell them their bills are overdue and they will have their power shut off unless they make payments over the phone.
At least two people have received these calls.
"North Georgia EMC representatives never call customers asking for credit card information," North Georgia EMC spokesman Jeff Rancudo said in a statement. "Credit card transactions by phone can only be initiated by calling North Georgia EMC's published phone numbers."
Anyone who receives such a phone call is asked to call their local police and the utility company.
