BUFORD, Ga. -- Officials in Gwinnett County said Monday afternoon that the man who fell from the third floor at the Mall of Georgia Sunday did so as a suicide attempt.
Gwinnett County Police spokesman Sgt. Rich Long said the victim, a man in his 40s, fell more than 30 feet.
"He bought a ticket to a movie and went upstairs to the Regal Cinemas on the third floor. He was sitting on the balcony railing that overlooks downstairs. An employee asked him to get down. At that point he went over the railing," Long said.
He was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center.
The fact that the victim hit the second floor on his way down may have actually saved his life.
"Looking at it, the fact that he struck the second floor on his way down may have slowed his momentum down. It is amazing that he was conscious and responding when help arrived," Long said.
The Mall of Georgia released a statement saying, "Our thoughts are with the person involved with this incident."
