ATLANTA (AP) -- The number of high school seniors applying to
Georgia State University is up 25 percent over last year.
The university announced Tuesday that a record 10,500 students
have applied to the downtown Atlanta campus, compared to last
year's 8,400. And acceptances are up 20 percent compared to last year.
The university's freshman class likely will be about 2,900
students this coming fall, up from the 2,700 freshmen enrolled this school year. The university has about 28,000 students.
Scott Burke, director of undergraduate admissions, says the
growth can be attributed to the souring economy, which has driven many students toward affordable public colleges. He also said the university has cranked up its recruiting campaign over the last
year.
