LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- Local governments are looking for ways to cut costs in tough economic times, and some of them decided to forego their annual July 4 fireworks displays without help from private sources.
Among those who won't put on a fireworks show this year is
Gwinnett County.
Gwinnett County spokeswoman Heather Sawyer says the event
usually costs about $200,000, with about $85,000 coming from
corporate sponsorships.
Marcia Hampton, director of the Douglasville Community and
Downtown Services Department, says the city was planning to cancel its display until it found two last-minute sponsors of Saturday show.
Duluth City Clerk Teresa Lynn said the Gwinnett County city
decided to put it on when the bands performing at this year
volunteered to play for free.
